This dining experience is about stunning food in a stunning location. It starts with the Cafe building. It is not pretentious or full of designer themes that project false facades. It is about functionality and its methodology is very simple. It is a building in which to eat exquisite food in a stunning landscape and it is the food that brings people here. Put simply it is exceptional and as you eat, your senses will melt into the surroundings around you. This is a place for people who love food but it is also so much more than that.

Our focus on regional fare has always been there, but has become more important to us and our customers over the past 2-3 years. With the Taste of the West Awards and similar regional competitions, the awareness of regional sourcing, responsible fishing and sustainable sourcing have all been raised in the awareness of the public. We make sure that not only do we keep with this trend but that we play an important role in it, educating our customers and working with the authorities and associations leading the way.
Being chosen by Sea Fish as an ambassador for the Sea Food Devon and Dorset initiative is a great example of how the Hive has been recognised for our efforts in this important area, which sets us apart from many of the local and regional outlets.
The Hive is still a family run business and you will still see Steve Attrill, the proprietor in the café most mornings setting up for the day.
His family are still very much involved with his daughter working here when she is back from University, his nephew being one of the chefs and his youngest, Maisy, always keen to help out when she can. On busy days you’ll see the whole family serving food, clearing tables or making coffee. Its still a real family affair.

With views like this......take your pick. The ambience of the café is very relaxed. It doesn’t matter to us if you join us in your t-shirt and shorts, or in a smart business suit. Your welcome will be the same.... Warm,and friendly. Likewise, come on your own, with your partner for a romantic dinner, or with the whole family with the kids and the dogs. Its all the same to us and you’re all very welcome.

The menu choice we offer is vast. We offer everything from a cup of tea to a full blown sea Crustacean Creation accompanied by a bottle of locally produced wine. You can spend £2 or £200 and you will be made to feel just as welcome. The food available provides a kaleidoscope selection of goodies from home made cakes, through café traditional fare, to restaurant quality fish, caught using environmentally friendly fishing methods.
